HOW CAN I LEARN KLINGON?

INTRODUCTION

The Klingon language is relatively easy. You can see this on the fact that it is described in only two small books. On the other hand, it is exactly this what makes it so difficult to learn, as there are no other sources you can learn from.
The following shall show you all of the available books which are necessary to learn the klingon language. These are all considered canon, i.e. they are all written by the creator of the language, Marc Okrand.

BRIEF SUMMARY

The most important book about the Klingon language is - as the name says itself - The Klingon Dictionary by Marc Okrand. This could be called the "bible" of every klingonist, as it contains everything you need to know to learn the language. What is also recommended for any beginner is the audiotape Conversational Klingon. For the advanced klingon student we recommend Klingon for the Galactic Traveler, which contains much more background information about the klingon culture, then The Klingon Way, a collection of Klingon proverbs and attitudes, and another audiotape called Power Klingon.

Most of these books and the tapes have been translated into german. It is very important that you order the updated version of Das Offizielle Wörterbuch, because the first edition had been translated so badly, and contained too many mistakes. You can use the old book to start learning Klingon, but the more you learn, the more mistakes you will learn.

Most of these books used to be available at a good bookstore. If not, you can search one of many online-stores or even ebay. If you like, we can bring one of these to the qepHom.

THE KLINGON LANGUAGE INSTITUTE

KLI The Klingon Language Institute, which is located in Philadelphia, USA, has been founded in 1992 with its goal to teach and promote the Klingon language. Having a close contact with Marc Okrand, the KLI is the best and worldwide platform for Klingon speakers and students. The KLI hosts an annual meeting called qep'a' to give its members the opportunity to meet and practice klingon.
Even more interesting and important ist the email-discussion group, where everyone can learn and speak klingon. A membership with the KLI is surely recommended and will help you to learn but also promote the Klingon language.

Star Trek: Klingon is advancing into the neutral Zone and gives us a great insight into Klingon daily life as never been shown before, including a language lab. This is not a standard computer game, but some kind of interactive movie, presented in the mode of a holodeck simulation. You can stop the movie at any time and click around on things to get information about them. It's not a game, it's a huge database about Klingons.

The most important part of it is the language lab, teaching Klingon on a fun way, even with a voice recognition system checking your pronunciation. // Might not work on new computers.

Finally, all of the mistakes of the German translation of TKD have been corrected.

Not only the badly translated German text, but also all of the grammar explanations and vocabulary lists are now correct. Now you can really use this book and be sure that you are now learning correct Klingon. If you like to make a Klingon name, you can be sure not to produce rubbish. All of the pronunciation hints are now readible for German speakers; this means that you can pronounce klingon without any knowledge of it. The german translation of "The Klingon Dictionary" is so bad that one can only use it if you want to check something back you don't understand while reading the original english. It's certainly enough for beginners, to get a short overview of the klingon language. But if you want to seriously learn with it, you will learn the mistakes.
Besides of some stupid typos (like quamDu' instead of qamDu', qatkh for qatlh) there are many bad translation mistakes ("tribble" translated using the word for "tribe", or "frightener" confused with "freighter") and even some topic-mistakes (writing the letter "o" for the zero-prefix).
A list of all mistakes is available here, but only in German. A revised and corrected version is available since 2013. See the above entry.

Although mentioned at the first page "This book is not related with any producers of Star Trek", it was taken from the market pretty fast, so it's not available any more. The reason might be that it contains teaching on how to use the bat'leth, probably something that Paramount did not want to show to the standard viewer.
From a linguistic point of view it is interesting that the book contains many Klingon expressions, some of them just taken from TKW, others written by the author.
